Choosing the right packaging for your manufacturing operation

In the manufacturing industry packaging is an essential, but often overlooked, part of the supply chain. 

In fact, if you’re not giving your packaging the attention it needs, it could have consequences that cost you money and negatively impact your reputation. 

Take product damage as an example, packaging is your first line of defence when it comes to minimising this.  The expense of replacements and reverse logistics can mount up – but can be avoided if your packaging is spot on. 

So, what kind of things should you consider when choosing your packaging?

1. Product weight 

If you’re shipping heavy items, your packaging will need to be able to withstand the weight. So, you might consider things like wooden crates or tri-wall boxes. If your product is lighter or needs less protection, you can make savings by downgrading packaging specifications.

Are your products fragile or do they require surface protection? You need to make sure they’re secured in transit with packaging that absorbs impacts or braces your goods in position.

This is especially important if you’re in the automotive or aerospace sectors, where even the smallest imperfection can mean your goods are rejected on delivery. 

You’ll need to consider if your products must be packaged in industry standard materials or be protected from industry specific threats. For example, if you’re manufacturing electronics, you’ll need anti-static packaging. 

Alternatively, if you’re producing metal goods, you might need to consider packaging that has anti-corrosion properties to minimise deterioration in transit or storage. Likewise, if you manufacture food products, your packaging may need to be stored in a food safe environment.
